The house was quiet. Really, really quiet. Kalamity missed the noise and bustle that used to take place here. Between her, and her brother, and her parents there was also something going on. Not to mention the extra commotion from Dante, Zaylin, and Ava. She also missed working at the barn with Lucian. Those horses were her life. Next to Dante, being in a barn made her whole. The 4 stall barn on the side of her home had been empty for years. Her parents would never let her get a horse, even though they had had more than enough space for it. She sighed and looked out across the rolling field that was her backyard. Their property sprawled all the way to the tree line of the woods, a high wood fence marking the edge were safety met danger. Their house hadn’t been looted, thankfully, and the Blood-Thirst band kept a strict rep to keep other people away from their property. They had to fight, not something that was pretty, but something they had done proudly. Plagued had tried to get at them, so had the Awakened, and even some Survivors. It was the fight to win every single time that the Blood-Thirst gang got their rep. A rep was all a gang had now. It kept people away and it kept their home safe. They still hadn’t taken down the boards in the windows or the doors yet, but plenty knew to steer clear of this house.
Kalamity moved around the living room and out the hidden door to the deck. As she moved outside a cool breeze kicked up and made her long black hair dance across her face. She flicked her hair over her shoulder as she pulled her jacket tighter around her body. She walked to the edge of the deck and leaned on the railing, heaving a heavy sigh. The boys were out hunting. That left the girls to keep watch over though house. Two of which were sleeping. So really that left Kal. Yeah, she’d be able to fight off five Plagued all by herself. No big deal. Yeah right. She was skilled, but not that skilled. She and Zaylin were a great team, always had been. That was just how they had rolled since day one. Ava on the other hand, they had never really gotten along with. Kal had always though she was just a shady little girl. In retrospect, Kal was usually quite cold to the youngest in their group, but something just didn’t feel right about her. On the same hand, something didn’t seem quite right with Zaylin lately either. Ever since she and Lucian had met up with Kal and the others, Z just hadn’t been exactly the same. Kal caught this a mile away and hadn’t let it go since. And she was still trying to get into what was going on with her best friend.
Heaving a sigh again, Kal looked to the sky. Thick black clouds loomed overhead, a definite sign that a storm was coming in from the lake on the other side of the woods. Nonchalantly she pushed herself off the railing and made her way back into the luxurious living room. She glanced around the living room and momentarily contemplated starting a fire in the huge fireplace. But Kal thought better against it and instead plopped down on the nice black leather couch. She sighed and leaned back, huddling into a little ball in the corner and just let her mind wander. One of the other girls would be up soon to keep her company, but until then she was left to her own inner workings of her mind. And that was usually a very dark place.

If We All Just Stopped His hands burned her skin wherever he touched. His lips felt so tender and so passionate against hers. The two were so tangled that it was hard to tell where she started and he ended. He began to tenderly kiss her jawline as she pulled herself closer to him. His lips trailed down her neck and found her sweet spot on her collar bone. He kissed it tenderly as she let out a soft moan. “Rayce,” she whispered.
Zaylin jolted up right, her breath coming out fast and heavy. She felt the sweat drip down the side of her face as she quickly glanced around. She noticed there were no signs of the boys; this seemed to calm her down. Though she still felt her heart beat hard against her chest. Zaylin’s head whipped around to Kalamity’s normal sleeping position and noticed she was gone. In the silence of the room, Z heard the secret back door close. Thank god. Zaylin really didn’t want to explain her current state. Before her friend could walk back into the house, Zaylin grabbed some clothes and bolted to one of the bathrooms. She made sure not to wake the other sleeping girl as well. She closed the door quietly and finally let out the breath she had been holding. She leaned up against the off white wall and slid to the floor. The cold of the tile was a slight shock against her bare legs. But she didn’t care. Honestly it was the only thing keeping her focused. Z stared intensely at the floor as she tried to erase the dream from her mind. But no matter what she did it stuck in her mind. To think a couple years ago Zaylin would have loved a dream like that. Now it brought on so many bad emotions that the girl couldn’t find any joy in it.
The survivor sucked in a shaky breath. Zaylin did everything she could to keep those emotions at bay. Quietly, she started the shower. Hopefully nobody would hear her. She quickly washed herself; it took maybe a couple of minutes, before Zaylin jumped back out of the shower. The house wasn’t in a very good condition, so Zaylin wasn’t going to press her luck with the water. She finally brought herself to turn on the lights in the bathroom. The lighting flickered a little before in turned on. Zaylin squinted her eyes before she brought herself to look into the mirror. Her thick brown hair already starting to form some sort of curl. But she barely paid attention to it. The semi-brightness of the room made Zaylin notice every flaw on her face. To be honest the girl’s skin was normally flawless and she rarely found any fault on her. But this morning she was finding every flaw. Her eyes trailed down to her upper arms and chest. The light scars from the earlier months were very noticeable today. It was like Zaylin’s brain wanted her to notice that she wasn’t as perfect as she appeared to be. She wasn’t the perfect best friend to Kalamity, the perfect friend to Rayce, Ava, and Dante. And she was most definitely not the perfect wife to Lucian.
Biting the inside of her bottom lip, Zaylin closed her eyes. No matter how hard she tried a couple of tears managed to escape her eyes. She quickly inhaled and shook her whole head. No. She was not going to lose it. Not with Ava and Kalamity in hearing range. Nobody needed to know about her emotions and her mistakes. She had to appear happy, clam, and together. There would be no need for confrontation, no need for tears. In a dark situation as this, someone had to be happy. Someone had to bring the smiles. And that someone was going to be her. Zaylin glared at herself in the mirror before she continued to get herself ready. Zaylin yanked her hair back into a cute side pony tail. She looked at the clothes she had grabbed and noticed how cute they were. Even when she wasn’t paying attention Zaylin still managed to pull together a nice outfit. Giggling slighty, Z pulled on her black jean shorts and white tank top. Of course before this she did put underwear and a bra on. She grabbed red, white, and black plaid dress shirt and adjusted it to fit every curve of her body. Zaylin rolled up her sleeves slightly before putting on a leather band on her right wrist. She threw on a long sliver necklace with a black feather and red beads on the end of it. Finally the girl covered her eyes with a light shade of eye shadow and black mascara.
Satisfied with herself, Zaylin proudly walked out of the bathroom with a smile on her face. She walked past the leather couch and noticed Kalamity chilling on it from the corner of her eyes. She lightly tossed her pajama shirt onto her sleeping bag before walking over to her friend. “Good morning!” Zaylin greeted with a quiet tone so Ava wouldn’t wake up. She plopped herself down next to her friend and casually leaned back on the leather couch. Her arms chilling on the back of the couch. “What are we thinking about this morning?” she casually asked smirking at her friend. She knew very well that her best friend had wandered into the deepest part of her brain by now. And depending on what Kalamity was thinking, she was hopefully not going to notice anything off about Zaylin’s mood.

As Kalamity sat on the couch her mind wandered restlessly. Finally, it rest itself on a dream she had had a few weeks ago. It had been stuck in her brain since she’d had it, and she had never actually had a chance to think about it. She did remember though that it had scared her enough to push it to the back of her mind until she was ready to deal with it.
The dream had begun in her house, and she had been standing at the front window, looking carefully through the cracks in the boards. As was usual, the street was barren of and form of life, but something didn’t feel right. Kal prided herself on her killer intuition and this feeling was sending shivers down her spine. “Kalamity…” A gruff throaty voice breathed in her ear and she turned around quickly, though no one was there. The voice whispered her name again and she quickly moved into the other room. Still no one was there. She carefully scoured the entire house, all the while hearing her name being whispered, but still finding no one in the house. She stopped in her living room and sighed, eyes continuously moving about the room. “Kalamity…” she heard again from the front room and whipped around to stare at the doorway. There stood a dark figure that looked like it was literally smoking black plums, with eyes that were a fierce burning red. The figure twisted its mouth into a large evil grin showing of rows of gleaming razor teeth. “We’ve been waiting…” it said, but not out loud. Kal heard its voice in her head. “We’ve waited a long time for you to be on our side…” Suddenly the figure moved and was standing in front of Kal before she could even blink. Out of sheer panic she threw herself back but the thing lashed out and grabbed her neck. “Don’t fight what you are deep down…” Kal struggled against its death grip around her neck, but the thing wouldn’t let go…
The sound of Zaylin’s voice sliced Kalamity’s thoughts in half. She jolted up and looked at Zaylin. “Morning yourself,” she said, flicking her best friend a smile as the other girl plopped down on the couch next to her. The second question didn’t quiet phase her. “I had a weird dream a few days ago,” Kal answered, leaving out specifics. “Just never had the time to sit down and think about what it meant.” She threw out a shrug. Her friends knew she had a little bit of a thing for analyzing dreams. Kalamity was a firm believer that dreams held messages; people just didn’t usually take the time to figure it out. Truth be told though, Kal had no idea what her dream even meant. Next time she could get out she was going to the library though. Symbolization could be a number of things in that dream alone.
Looking at Zaylin, Kal wasn’t so put off that she didn’t realize her friend was a little off too. She knew there was something up with her but for right now, Kal was going to bid her time before she actually asked what was going on in Zaylin’s mind. “Ava’s not up yet, huh?” she asked, though it wasn’t like she actually cared. The only reason to try was still because the girl was Dante’s younger sister. Unfortunately for Kal, it was mandatory in her situation. She sighed and looked around her living room. “How about you, you okay with all this?” she asked, speaking very generally on purpose. There were very few things Zaylin would talk openly about now. Their current situation would be one of them.

If We All Just Stopped “Dreams are tricky things…” Zaylin’s voice trailed off as the images of her reoccurring dream flooded back to her. She felt her cheeks heat up slightly as she glanced away from her friend momentarily. Her eyes scanned the room, trying to find something other than her friend to stare at until the blush was safely away. “What was your dream about?” Talking about things, such as dreams, with Kalamity was a big hit or miss. At least with most people it was like that. With Zaylin Kal was pretty open about things, at least that’s what Z thought. She looked back over at her best friend when she felt her cheeks cool down. Zaylin knew her friend had a thing for examining dreams. Honestly it was a cool hobby. One that Zaylin liked to watch her do. She remembered back in high school when she had a freaky dream, that she would remember vividly, Kalamity would always help her interpret it. Even the dreams that were pretty straight forward she still had her friend out, because it was just habit. Though right now she was breaking the habit. It was obvious what her dream was saying, but she didn’t want to hear or did she want to tell Kal about it. Maybe when they are old and grey she will say something; if they even make it to that point.
At the mention of Ava’s name, Zaylin quickly looked over at the sleeping girl. Or at least the girl that appeared to be sleeping. For all she knew Ava was listening to their conversation, that sneaky girl. She was the only one that knew of her transgressions. Zaylin suppressed the urge to glare at her. She was waiting for the day when the girl would use it against, though it hasn’t come to that point yet. And that’s only because Z had recently bump of the notch of kindness towards the girl. She let Ava join on trips she went on. Recently she was teaching Ava how to build and take apart certain firearms. Honestly if it wasn’t for the secret, Zaylin would actually be enjoying their time together. Thinking about it now, Ava wasn’t that bad of a kid. She just wanted to be accepted by her brother’s girlfriend and friends. Something Zaylin regrets not acting on until now. Who knows maybe Ava would be giving her advice about her situation instead of black mailing her. “Doesn’t look like it,” Zaylin muttered to Kal before turning attention back to her best friend. What she wouldn’t give for Kal to know everything, just like the old days. But Rayce was her brother and she’s the one that set Zaylin and Lucien up. Oh what a tangle web Z weaves.
“Hm?” Zaylin questioned pulling her focus back to the current conversation. The questioned repeated itself in her head. And within seconds all her scars to seem to heat up, as if reminding her that she had more important things to worry about than some affair she was having. Something that was extremely life or death. “I’m not okay with it, but it is what it is. I’m just happy to be here with you guys, some people aren’t so lucky.” She gave her friend a smile that was more forced than natural. Before meeting up with Kalamity and the others Zaylin had hid away with Lucien. Then her plagued father found them and attacked them. They had escaped, after she killed her dad, and joined another group of survivors. Of course that didn’t last long when more plagues attacked and captured some of them. Two of them being Lucien and Zaylin. The prisoners were then tortured for information about other survivors. Zaylin and Lucien didn’t break. None of them did. Though there were some days Zaylin wanted to, just so she could die and not be there anymore. Luckily they managed to escape and found their way to Kalamity and the gang. It was an experience that nobody should ever go through. But Zaylin knew there were others out there in that same position, alone.
Noticing her mood was slowly declining, Zaylin grinned back up at Kal. “So! What’s on the agenda for today?” Things were getting too serious for her, she needed to distract and cheer everybody up. By everybody, she meant Kalamity.

Kalamity raised her eyebrows. She knew exactly what Zaylin was talking about. Details in a dream usually didn’t last until you woke up. They tended to fade the moment you woke up. Unfortunately for Kal, the details of her dream were all too entirely present. This was weird for her. Usually things in a dream were fuzzy, things never added up entirely. But this dream, everything was so fluid, so real, that Kal couldn’t just write it off. Which is why it had been in the back of her mind ever since. Kalamity looked at Ava as well, sleeping in the next room. She understood completely why Zaylin had answered that question the way she did. Ava was a sly girl, tricky, and again, not likable in the least. At least to Kal. Kal kept her mouth buttoned shut for now though. For they knew, Ava was just pretending to be asleep. Before all this, the youngest girl had often snuck around trying to get information from the old girls. Usually, it was because she wanted to get Dante and Rayce to hate the both of them, so that she could be the center of attention. Realistically though, it had never really worked. Kalamity watched the young girl carefully for a moment. Her breathing seemed slow and regular, like she was in deep sleep, but Kalamity wasn’t going to take her chances on it. The last thing she wanted was for Ava to hear her dream and report back to Dante about it. Then he would never get off her back. “I’ll tell you about it in a minute,” |
she muttered under her breath. When Zaylin finally answered the question, Kalamity noticed her mind had wandered slightly. She narrowed her eye momentarily. There was something her best friend wasn’t telling her. She knew that much. What it was though, Kalamity had yet to find out. She still had to interrogate her brother about it though. Next to herself, Rayce was the next person Zaylin was closest to. When the boys came back, Kal was going to go full on CIS on his ass to see what he knew. If she couldn’t get him to spill, she would just have to see when Z would come around and tell her. She listened carefully to her friend’s answer. Kal had still yet to really find out what had happened to her and Lucian in the time that they were separated from the rest of them. Zaylin was right. They were lucky. Many were missing family and had to make do with other people that they didn’t know. Granted they were missing family, but for what it was worth and in the time as it was, they had each other and that was what matted most. They were a family now, and realistically they were better off than most anyone else that Kal knew of. “I hear that, Z, I hear that,” she answered, somewhat darkly. “Family’s gotta stick together.” That was one of Kalamity’s biggest weaknesses. Family. It was a killer in the situation, made all the worse by the predicament the world was in. Kalamity shrugged at Zaylin’s question. Agenda? When was there really ever an agenda? More often than not, they would wing it. Today though, Kal didn’t feel like doing anything. There was nothing more than what she wanted to do than go to the library honestly. She sighed and her cold eyes washed over Ava again. “Follow me,” she said nodding to the hidden back door to the back deck of the house. She stood swiftly and glided across the room. She didn’t want to dare make a sound and risk waking Ava. That was the last thing she needed or wanted. She held the door open for Z, before following her out onto the deck, and shutting the back door noiselessly behind her. She glanced at the door as she and Zaylin walked to the edge of the deck. Sighing, she pulled herself up onto the railing and looked at her hands. “I wasn’t about to spill details of my dream with the possibility of Ava overhearing,” she said. Her voice, when talking of the youngest in the group, had taken on a permanently harsh tone. She looked at Zaylin. “In the dream, I was standing in the front room and I heard my name being whispered over and over again. I looked everywhere but couldn’t find anyone. Then I saw this black figure with glowing red eyes. It was almost demonic,” she said, looking over her shoulder at the edge of the forest just beyond her land. She played it over in her mind. Kal had specifically left out what the creature had said to her. She didn’t know what it meant, or why it would have said that. “I want to go to the library to figure it out, cuz I’ve honestly got nothing. Unfortunately, we have to wait for a great men to return,” she said, letting the last bit drip with sarcasm as she rolled her eyes. The girls were just as capable as the boys were. They just tended to prove it better on the battlefield. [/div] [/style]

If We All Just Stopped Zaylin nodded, Kalamity would tell her when she wanted to tell her about the dream. Z knew that much, she could be patient and wait a minute…or two. Z beyond distracted today, which was something Kal was surely going to notice. She couldn’t help it though. There was too much to think about. Too much to worry about. Too much to confess. Life was getting extremely ridiculous. If the world didn’t space up soon Zaylin wasn’t sure what she was going to do with herself. The word ‘family’ made Zaylin’s stomach turn unpleasantly. Yes, this was her now. They were all her family. But her blood family was long gone. Her dad was dead thanks to her. And he was the only blood relative Zaylin had. If Zaylin’s sense of family wasn’t messed up before it was definitely messed up now. But she didn’t have time to reflect on her values. She had a new family now. A new family she had to protect and enjoy. A new family to be ripped apart and used against. It was just a matter of time. They all knew it, they were all weaknesses for each other. But Zaylin wasn’t going to say anything. All that terrible reality news was more Kalamity’s and Lucien’s thing. Z liked to be the one to have people look on the brighter. At least they weren’t plagues. Or being used as snacks. Or tortured.
The survived inhaled sharply when Kalamity spoke to her once more. “I don’t wanna get up,” she muttered to herself jokingly, but nonetheless followed Kalamity. Before she left the room, Z glanced once more at Ava. She was sure the girl was asleep but precautions had to be taken apparently. Zaylin squinted at the morning light as soon as she stepped onto the deck. Inhaling the morning smell, Z leaned her elbows on the railing. Her eyes staring intently at the back yard. She barely noticed the rail shake when Kalamity jumped onto it. This old thing was surely going to break. It went through so much abuse. Such has people leaning on it, sitting on it, walking on it…having sex against it. The survivor suppressed the urge at the memory of her and Rayce doing such deed. Of course that was followed by a memory of Lucien and her doing the same. Yea, this railing was going to break soon. Her mind was brought back to the present when her best friend spoke. “Understandable…that girl…she’s something else…” Zaylin stated carefully. She was Dante’s younger sibling, and despite everything, Zaylin knew she had to be somewhat kind with her words…out of respect to Dante. Even if neither one of them were present.
Dragging her eyes to Kal, Zaylin listened intently to her description of the dream. Glowing red eyes? Demonism? That’s just what this world needed, demonic things crawling out of the cracks. The next thing Zaylin was going to build was going to be a destruct button. Blowing up the world would be so much easier than dealing with all this junk. She squinted her eyes at her friend for second; there was something she wasn’t saying about the dream. Zaylin couldn’t say how she knew but she knew. Of course she quickly composed herself before Kal caught on. The survivor never thought her and her best friend would keep secrets from each other, but here they were. Clearly keeping something from one another. If that wasn’t a sign that the world was ending, Zaylin didn’t what would. She let out a snort at the sound of sarcasm from her friend. “Those boys wouldn’t survive without us,” she stated jokingly with a smirk. She turned her attention back to the forest.
That’s when it dawned on her, Kalamity was going to leave her alone with the boys and Ava. It wouldn’t be the first time, but after last night’s extremely realistic dream, Z really didn’t want to be left alone with them. “Would you mind if I came with you? I need to get out of the house,” she stated and then quickly added, “if I have to clean one more gun, I might shoot myself.” When Zaylin and Lucien joined up with the gang, they were given loose roles. Zaylin had taken to firearms. So she was in charge of the maintenance and care. So she was around the weapons more than she was around human beings. And ever since they joined up with the others, Lucien (and even Rayce) barely let her go out. Z had proven herself more than once she was able to hold up her own in a fight and in the world. But Lucien was over protective, and honestly Z knew they were scared of losing her. Not just physically losing her. But mentally as well. When Zaylin and her husband came to them, she was hysterical. And when they calmed her down, she went into a catatonic state; until Rayce comforted her. They were probably just scared she was going to lose it again. Which was reasonable. But she was going to DEFINITELY lose it if she didn’t get more freedom.
