Ian grabbed a sliver collar with a connected leash before whistling over his shoulder. The chocolate lab, also named Delilah, came pounding down the stairs. When she saw the leash her tail went crazy, almost putting dents in the walls. “Calm down, we are just going to get some food,” Ian stated in a calm tone. Scarlett was at work for the day and Ian got bored. He had decided to go barter for food. It had been awhile since he bartered for food on his own. Usually Scarlett just went to stores or carts and used her own money to get supplies. Every now and then he would convince her to go to barter for food in the city limits. It was the only neutral place and Ian loved bartering for things. It was fun being able to interact with other survivors. But of course she had to go with; Scarlett didn’t like the idea of having her best friend out in a world where he could get abducted and potentially get killed. So to please her, Ian had promised not to leave the house unless it was with her or out to the woods (during daytime).
Of course Ian was also super impulsive, which often got him in trouble and made him sometimes break his promises. And this was one of those times and one of those promises. He knelt down and fastened the leash onto their pet dog. He quickly grabbed the house key off the hook and walked out the front door. He made sure the front door was locked before heading to the city limits. It was weird being able to walk down the streets of the awakened suburb and not be bothered. Ian felt almost guilty about it. While he lived and was essentially protected by his roommate, other survivors were struggling to just live. He used to be one of them, until he moved in with Scarlett. Honestly he could be seen as weak. But Ian saw himself as strong, strong enough to trust an awakened that wasn’t even related to him. Of course the trust was easy to build since the two had sex…twice. The two considered it a weird bonding thing, and that’s all. Ian found Scarlett attractive and was attracted to her, but his feelings for her were strictly that of a friend. And she felt the same, or at least that’s what she would tell him all the time. Ian would like to believe it was true, but he wasn’t exactly the best at reading females. After all he spent his better part of his years oblivious to his best friend’s feelings, and his own. And now he had no idea where she was. Which was another reason he liked to go out to the city limits. Call it extreme optimism but he believed she was still alive. And possibly a survivor or awakened. Ian had no idea what he would do if he found out she was dead or a plagued.
The guilt began to build up in him. He was the one that left her. He left and never went back. He figured that she wouldn’t want to see him after he practically abandoned her. Of course now he was determined to find her and make amends. It was something brought on by his impulsiveness. Ian finally got to the city limits, where it was shockingly busy today. There were at least ten more people here than normal. Ian walked over to a food cart as Delilah began pulling his arm in a different direction. “Delilah!” he stated sternly, trying to pull her with him. Either he didn’t have a good enough grip or Delilah was just that strong; either way the leash slipped out of his hand and the dog went running. Ian groaned as he ran after the dog. He side stepped a couple before finally setting his eyes on his dog. She was sitting perfectly still, getting petted. The dog had stopped by a man and a woman. The man was a little taller than him and little more muscular. And the woman was tiny, with black hair… Ian’s heart stopped for a couple of seconds. No, it couldn’t be. He took a couple of steps and was a few feet away from the two. Yes, it was her. He opened his mouth and only one word came out, “Aria?”
